Hey Si,

I was super chuffed regarding Ovi Maps being free. I got a E52 two weeks ago (wanted an iPhone, but man, the payin was just too much). When I got the news, I checked my s/w updates and voila, it was there. I managed to test drive it yesterday a couple of times since I had to drive and walk to locations which I'd never been to before and I was rather impressed! Although there were two occasions where it could of navigated me down a more direct road here and there, overall, it was a good experience. I hadn't had any previous experience with Garmin or TomTom, so for a navi newbie, it was great.

Needless to say, since I knew where I was going, I logged onto Ovi Maps on the web beforehand on my PC and pegged my destinations and saved them to my favourites and sync'ed them with my phone. So while in the car, I was able to hit drive and select my destination without any lengthly on-device map lookups.

Nokia did a good thing here and I somehow cannot think that it was possibly Google's free Google Maps Navigation app that kickstarted Nokia to do this although there isn't even a version of Google Maps Navigation for Symbian yet, so my feelings are mixed as to why the tide changed. But in the end, I'm a very happy Ovi Maps user ... hopefully I'll be putting myself into having to use Ovi Maps, so only time will tell how good Ovi Maps really is.
