Putting MWEB to the test

Putting MWEB to the test

February 19, 2011  |  Competitions  |  Share  |

In 2010 I published a column on Fin24.com lamenting the lack of decent connectivity options for small to medium-sized organisations in South Africa. This sparked a discussion on Twitter and me being contacted by MWEB with a suggestion that I select a non-profit or non-governmental organisation in South Africa to test MWEB’s uncapped business ADSL service.

MWEB believes it has the solution to small organisations’ internet needs and I want you to test their claim for me. But instead of me choosing an organisation, I want you to.

So here’s the deal: if you’re a non-governmental or non-profit organisation, tell us why you need the bandwidth and what you intend to do with it, and we’ll put it to the vote. The winners (we’ve got two connections to give away) will be decided by readers of this website.

If your organisation needs the bandwidth please post a short comment below telling us what you do and why you need it.

You’ll notice a ‘like’ button on each comment, please use that to vote for the organisation you think should win.

At competition’s end (to be announced), we’ll select the two organisations with the most votes and each will receive three months of uncapped ADSL from MWEB.

Please pay careful attention to the following conditions:

  • In order to qualify your organisation must be non-profit (NPO) or non-governmental (NGO) and registered within the Republic of South Africa.
  • Entrants must already have an ADSL-activated Telkom telephone line as we can not ensure availability in all areas. Please do not enter if you do not have an existing Telkom line.
  • Two connections are being given away – one to a business with 1 – 10 users (computers) and another to one with 11 – 50. Please ensure that you include the size of your organistion in your post.
  • The judges decision is final – meaning that myself and representatives of MWEB will have final say on the winner.
  • In case of a tie we will go into over-time and allow the tied organisations to motivate for more votes.
  • Please keep the descriptions of your business and motivation for winning to under 250 words.

And go…

PETS uses an emailed newsletter and website http://www.pets.org.za to reach and build their support basis creating awareness.

PETS also do Spay Days/Weekends at Townships to assist owners in these communities where no vetenary care is available. For this PETS need to do fundraising and create awareness via internet connection.

The Fisantékraal Centre for Development (FCD) mainly hope to train, equip and develop unemployed persons in various skills (based on market requirements) so that they may become self-supportive and financially independent. We are based in the Durbanville Taxi Rank area and while implementing our skills-related training we aim to develop our graduates socially, spiritually, emotionally and economically. We also wish to become involved in developing and serving the wider community, offering various training and growth opportunities to all ages.
We are affiliated with Learn to Earn who has successfully pioneered a holistic approach to developing people, with 80% of its graduates becoming economically active.

We focus on life skills, business skills with a mentorship programme, basic computer skills and office administration skills. With the opening of our Job Centre and the current needs of our students, it became imperative that we install an internet solution as soon as possible. Our students need it to practice their skills and to look for employment opportunities. The trainers and volunteers involved will also use it to search for opportunities to help out students. Furthermore, it is a way for the business students to do market research and to source suppliers and buyers. Who can work without internet access these days? Although we have 17 computers in our centre, we only need internet in the one room (10 computers). We would really appreciate your support!

    About RLabs
VISION OF THE RECONSTRUCTED LIVING LAB
TO IMPACT, EMPOWER AND RECONSTRUCT LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH INNOVATION.

Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs), a registered Non-profit organisation, offers the local community an opportunity to enhance their skills through the use of various technology programmes specially developed to support the needs of the citizens. The RLabs “main hub” is in Athlone, Cape Town but operates with partners in Atlantis, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and Stellenbosch. RLabs also launched its first Social Franchise in Portugal during 2010 with future RLabs franchises expected to be launched over the next few months.

    About the project:
The RLabs Innovation Incubator is a space where the community are able to develop ideas that will have a social and sustainable impact on communities locally and globally. The Innovation Incubator at the moment is an empty room with security gates and requires a major rework to change it into a creative space of hope.

Since you are an Internet service Provider we are proposing a sponsorship of a year’s free uncapped internet to make the new space a creative and fun web based environment and are requesting your assistance in this regard. If you are able to make a donation it would be much appreciated.

All our sponsors and donors will receive free publicity and branding on our website and all social networks.

RLabs would like to request to be considered for this opportunity for the category of staff 11 -50.
