iPhone 3GS shortage – over demand or under supply?

September 28, 2009  |  Apple, iPhone, Technology  |  Share  |

iPhone 3GSThe Apple iPhone 3GS has been out of stock in South Africa for almost a month. Vodacom, the local supplier, has not officially responded to my query on the subject and can not confirm when the next shipment will land although representatives of the Vodacom Service Provider company have told me that they expect stock in October 2009. The shortage is not just in South Africa, however, but is being experienced internationally.

The iPhone 3G experienced a similar supply problem which, we are told, is a simple side-effect of overwhelming demand. The 3G ran out of stock shortly after launch and it took Apple weeks to restore a steady supply internationally. This time it’s worse.

The current shortage is being reported in Australia, the USA and most other markets where the 3GS has been launched. In the US Apple has released a widget that becomes available during shortages and can be used to track availability at stores. This was recently disabled, however, which suggests that supply challenges are being alleviated.

I suspect that some demand creation could also be responsible for the wait, whereby Apple trickles stock into the market building up some hype and the impression of exclusivity along the way.

Whether sheer over-demand or intended trickle supply it is reasonable to expect the issue to be sorted out soon. That said, I suspect that when Vodacom does receive stock it will be snapped up quickly, so you might want to get your details down with a supplier if you plan on buying a 3GS.

This simply is a cluster$%%^. Learn lessons about no stock and repeat. Vodacom shoot themsleves in the foot all the time. On the Iphone you have a surefire hit, so invest in the stock, put your on the line and sell.

I am thinking about flying to london ( on airmiles) to get one.

Guys, its actually an international shortage.. apparently even in the US only 3 outa 10 stores have stock..

been waiting 6 weeks. The difference in SA is that other countries' operators post status updates on their websites. Vodacom wont even acknowledge they dont have stock – they really are pathetic.

Finally, someone notices and writes about it. Thanks Simon!

I'm tearing my hair out waiting here. Can't believe that Apple can't let us know how long we'll have to wait. Trickle supply really is a terrible way to increase demand. You're basically treating your most loyal customers like crap to try and increase demand? I wonder if they know that they stand a chance of losing loyal customers this way…

    Extremely frustrating!

I ordered my iPhone 3G S round about the same time that this article was written.

    I'm still waiting…

I'm not with Vodacom directly, but rather through one of their service providers, namely Nashua Mobile.

When I upgraded my contract and ordered the phone, they told me they were expecting stock on the 15th of October (today).

I phoned again round about the 10th and they said that a few actually had come in, about 70 or so… but I'm on back order so I'll have to wait.

I called yesterday and heard a completely different story. Apparently they're only expecting stock on the 15th of November now.

I find it a bit sickening that they won't [or can't] give the consumer a date or at least a STABLE ETA as to when the product is going to arrive.

The world doesn't revolve around the telecom companies (as much as they think it does). I'm sure some or other legislation will fix this soon. It's unacceptable.

Nashua mobile and Vodacom fall in the same category… Pathetic Service.
