Nice, detailed review here. My concern is pricing seems to vary. I checked today and the total price to ship to SA was $342.95 making delivery roughly $64. Then factor in Customs and VAT and it becomes a very expensive device compared to the “retail price” of $279.

For support the Kindle needs to be sent back to Amazon. I'd guess that the support would be good (based on my past interactions with Amazon) but the turn-around time would be slow. At least a week to get the broken Kindle back to them and then 2 to 7 days for it to be returned, unless they appoint a local service node. I'll ask about that.

Amazon says the plan is 'all content and all languages' so the plan is to definitely support it all in the future.

The Kindle does not have WiFi, so the short answer is no. You can only use Amazon's wireless service, no connecting to hotspots or anything like that.

I'd like to know what sort of after sales support I can expect, with what sort of turn-around times, if I break my Kindle. (or, more likely, if it breaks itself)

I'm also interested in knowing if Amazon plans on selling books by South African authors and if they do if any of the content will be non-English. (Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, etc.)

This small print comes up on Amazon's website when you buy a newspaper sub, 'Newspapers and magazines delivered outside the U.S. will not include photos and other images.'

Obviously this is Amazon's way of limiting 3G bandwidth (which doesn't make sense – they have to incur that cost in the US anyway), but would they deliver the images if you download using your home wireless?
